Is Google My Business becoming the new Facebook?

At the start of July 2017, Google introduced the revamped Google My Business. Just like publishing posts on Facebook, users can now also resort to likewise functionalities in Google My Business. Putting it more bluntly, users can from now on post text, images, videos, GIFs and events that will appear in the search results of your, or any other, company.

What are Google posts?

“Posting on Google is a new way to share relevant, fresh content with the people who are searching for you. Use image, videos and even animated GIFs to engage your audience, and ad inline links to drive traffic to specific content. This enhanced format allows searchers to hear directly from the primary source – you – and complements existing results from across the web.” – Google

As the above explanation by Google demonstrates, Google My Business is increasingly transitioning into a Facebook-like working. Nevertheless, one should not omit the crucial detail that Google posts will be removed after one week or after the set expiration date. This is obviously in sharp contrast to Facebook’s workings, which one should definitely take into account before abandoning Facebook altogether.

How to publish a post on Google

First and foremost, you need to start with the basics. And that entails that you have a Google My Business account, which can be registered here.

Once you’ve successfully registered, you’ll have to pinpoint your company on Google. This way, your location can be linked to your website, which is a crucial basic in today’s increasingly IoT-like environment.

While managing your company’s location in the Google hub, you can click on ‘Posts’ which is located in the left column. Simply proceed by clicking ‘write your post’, which will allow you to fill out any text you want with relevant accompanying pictures.

As a last step, once your post is completed and to your liking, you’ll have to choose if you want to list your post as an event or leave it as a basic post. You can even add a button if suitable, leaving you the option between respectively ‘reserve, sign up, buy or get offer’.

You can now review your post and publish it. The post can then be seen by people who are Google searching your company.
